Sedona & Red Rock Country
Red rock scenery, trailheads and a change of pace make the Sedona area a rewarding day trip or weekend from the Valley.
Your trip at a glance
Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek sit among northern Arizona’s red rock formations. The drive is often around two hours from Phoenix, but allow more time for your starting point, traffic and stops. A weekend gives you more breathing room if you want to combine a hike, a scenic drive and time in town.
Make the most of your visit
Start with the scenery
Choose a viewpoint or trail in the Red Rock Ranger District, then check the trailhead’s parking, difficulty and current conditions. Bell Rock near the Village of Oak Creek is one well-known formation; choose a route that fits your group and the weather.
Make a day of it
Start early, visit one outdoor area, take a lunch break and leave time for the drive back. Trailhead lots can fill, so have a backup destination and do not park where prohibited.
Stay longer
An overnight stay lets you enjoy the area at a more relaxed pace. Compare lodging locations with the trails and restaurants you want to visit, and reserve ahead when travel demand is high.

Know before you go
Some forest recreation sites require a Red Rock Pass or another accepted pass. Requirements vary by site; review the Forest Service’s information for your exact stop. Check road conditions, weather and any closures before departure.
